Richmondshire Building Preservation Trust (RBPT) are delighted to share initial illustrations of their plans* for the regeneration of the Grade II listed Old Grammar School in Richmond.
Following the approval of North Yorkshire Council to transfer the former school site to RBPT, subject to acquiring the necessary funding, the project is now moving forward at pace with large grant applications already underway.
Deputy Leader for North Yorkshire Council, Cllr Gareth Dadd, whose responsibilities include finance and assets, has said previously: “What is particularly appealing about the plans is that there is a big focus on providing opportunities for all ages, but especially young people to experience culture and access cutting-edge technology locally”.
RBPT’s Chief Executive Officer, Chris Brown, said: “We’re thrilled to be able to give the public a glimpse into what a regenerated Old Grammar may look like. The proposed uses align with the output from our extensive public consultation throughout 2024 and coupled with the vision of local architects, Matt Ball Architecture, are brought to life through inspiring building designs”.
“There’s no half measures or shortcuts in this project – we plan to preserve the heritage that already exists and add sympathetic extensions to future-proof the site, and provide space for a broad offering that fulfils the needs of our community whilst boosting the already vibrant visitor economy in Richmond”.
“Accessibility is key to the success of this project and in addition to all activities being SEN (Special Educational Needs) inclusive, the entire site will be fully accessible and among the 35+ on-site parking bays planned, there will also be accessible parking”.
The Old Grammar will be a Centre for Creativity and Digital Enterprise – but what does that mean?
Through the various uses announced by the trust, future visitors to The Old Grammar can Create, Collaborate and be Inspired when they walk through the historic doors.
Expect music, photography and makers studios; sports courts and digital sports hub (including bouldering wall); hospitality training and enrichment classes; escape rooms, arcade and sensory space; immersive digital exhibitions and displays; internationally renowned digital and traditional art; unique event spaces for hire including the former dining hall and natural riverside amphitheatre; possible relocation of Richmond’s library and so much more.
